But what about us folks who don't have platinum cards and suchlike?
I managed to get two carry on bags as one using the big plastic shopping bag technique (easyjet from turkey to UK only allow one carry on)

The trick is to get status on an airline. Free bags is just one of the perks. Try to stay with one airline and use them as much as possible. Even if the tickets are sometimes a little more than another. It pays off in the end.

Unfortunately, this isn't practical for most people. I fly a ton and I wasn't able to get status on any airlines (25,000 miles minimum for status unless you do the AA Challenge) last year. Well, I had status last year from 2009 flying, but I didn't fly enough in 2010 to renew it. Of course, I don't ever check bags anyway because I'm cool like that. ;) Plus the AmexPlat card pays for up to $200 in airline fees now! You can only choose one airline for these fee refunds, but it includes onboard food and drinks.

How did you not get status? I flew just over 75k last year... you travel more than me don't you? Are you using the cheapest airline at the time or something? Also, the amexplat $200 is annual. So you you're covered for about 1-2 flights.

I flew about 25 times last year. I didn't average 1,000 miles per flight. :) I'm a slow traveler and I used frequent flyer miles for $7k worth of business class tix last year. You don't get frequent flyer miles (or status miles) when you get free flights. :)

Where did you fly? I mean, RT JFK <-> DTW is 1,000 miles. For every 2 hours in the air you're earning about 1,000 miles (est).

I should rephrase. I flew more than 25,000 miles, but I didn't fly 25,000 paid miles. I flied a good 10,000 free business class miles. :) Lots of short flights. Finland > Poland. Chiang Mai > Bangkok. Goa > Mumbai. Doesn't add up. :)

lol... that's not practical travel =). The majority of people that fly travel to a destination and back. You're thinking of personal, I just wanna travel the world and see stuff, traveling. Which isn't practical or common. The common traveler, the ones airlines count on, are business folk that fly out somewhere every monday, and fly back every friday. If you're a tattoo artist that travels, then you'll probably be flying to and from conventions (Friday - Monday). And you'll be doing it all over the world a few times a year. All of which easily rack up milage.
